History


Arizona’s first university, The University of Arizona was established as the state’s land grant university in 1885, with an initial enrollment of six students. In 1967, a medical college was added, making the University currently one of only 12 AAU universities with a full array of land grant, health sciences, and other academic programs.

 

The University of Arizona takes pride in the quality and diversity of its 27,000 undergraduates - offering 137 baccalaureate programs; 21 residence halls that create a living-learning context for first-year students; an innovative interdisciplinary, university-wide General Education program; and a high-tech learning environment with state-of-the-art classrooms and library resources.

 

  • The University of Arizona ranked 15th in awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics in 2003.
  • The University of Arizona is one of the top 20 research universities in the nation, with a student enrollment of nearly 37,000, a faculty and staff of 12,500, and a 351-acre campus.
  • More than 7,000 degrees are conferred each year, including 700 doctoral and first professional degrees.
  • Total grants and contracts place The University of Arizona 14th among public universities in the nation.
  • The University has an array of top-ranked academic programs including cutting edge graduate interdisciplinary programs.
