What is COSMOS?

COSMOS is the university name for the current student information system. COSMOS has been developed and produced as a collaborative effort between Sungard SCT Inc., Exeter, Graduate College, University Information Technology Services (UITS), and Enrollment Management Systems Group (EMSG). COSMOS works in conjunction with Student Information System (SIS).

What is Matrix?

 "Matrix" is the software produced by Sunguard SCT Inc., built on Microsoft technologies, called SCT Matrix Student Suite. The SCT Matrix Student Suite is used to develop the current student system we call COSMOS.

Note: It is not uncommon to hear the terms "Matrix" and "COSMOS" used interchangeably when referring to the current student information system.

Purpose and Scope

The technology of COSMOS assists University of Arizona staff, faculty, advisors and administrators to provide superior student service, increase efficiency and to meet state requirements. COSMOS requires staff to learn new terminology and computer navigating skills. Overall, COSMOS allows the university community to easily access student information and communicate more effectively.

These two functions can be utilized as stand alone applications or as a suite of student applications.

CMN- Common System- the database structure that underlies all SCT Matrix Student Suite functions and applications

  • SAS - Student Aid System - Financial Aid
  • SMS - Student Marketing System- Undergraduate Admissions
  • SMS - Student Marketing System- Graduate College Admissions

In 2003, the CMN, SAS, SMS (both Undergraduate and Graduate College) modules were placed into production.
